My Friend Julia: A Sesame Street Book about Autism by Jennifer Cook.
Julia is autistic but also smart and funny. She likes creating art and building things just like her friends, but she also likes playing by herself. When Julia feels anxious, she hugs her stuffie, just like Elmo.
Sometimes Julia has behaviors that her friends don’t. She
might move her hands in a flapping motion. Loud noises make her anxious,
wearing headphones help. When she gets too anxious, she knows techniques to
help her relax.
Julia is not a hugger. She expresses her sadness differently
and supports her friend who is sad in a way that is comfortable for her. Just
like everyone is unique so are our friendships.
Story is told through narration and speech bubbles.
